Visual Artist

Siyuan Wang is a visual artist and practice-based researcher. Drawing on childhood memories, family experiences, and intimate relationships, her practice explores how abstract emotions, memories, and relational experiences take material form through everyday objects. She is particularly interested in the shifting boundaries between care and autonomy, attachment and separation, protection and control, as well as questions of femininity and female subjectivity.

Influenced by New Materialism and theories of care, Wang understands objects and materials as participants in the formation of emotions and relationships, rather than as passive carriers of meaning.

Grounded in visual narrative, her practice primarily involves ink, watercolour, Chinese ink-and-colour, coloured pencil, and soft pastel on sized silk (shujuan), while also incorporating textiles, stitching, soft sculpture, and responsive installations. Her work often combines soft, sweet, and decorative visual languages with surreal image-making, shifts in scale, and grotesque visual relationships. Through these strategies, familiar objects move between intimacy and estrangement, creating a tension in which calmness, tenderness, and unease coexist. This visual tension is not intended to produce dramatic conflict, but rather to reveal the complexity inherent in relationships, as well as the contradictions between social discipline and female subjectivity.

In recent years, her research has increasingly focused on everyday material practices, relational boundaries, and female subjectivity. She approaches art-making as a material mode of research rather than simply a means of representing pre-existing experience. Through artistic practice, she examines how emotions, relationships, and identities that are difficult to articulate are continually produced, negotiated, and reconfigured in everyday life, making them visible, tangible, and open to renewed understanding.
